I don’t get how oil prices work. I know at one point oil is drilled up by oil companies, and then it gets to gas stations. The confusing thing to me is the oil futures market. How does that factor in? Do the oil companies not actually sell the oil directly to the gas stations? Please help me out here.

If, like the majority of the OPEC and oil companies leaders say, that the oil market is “well supplied” and gas consumption has decreased, why does the price per barrel of oil continue to dramatically rise?

Some oil leaders have also said there is no justification for the way oil prices are right now or why they continue to rise and that it doesn’t make any sense. Apparently, supply is greater than demand, at least for right now.

Why is this? Thoughts?
