Why Gas Prices and Oil Prices No Longer Seem to Move Together

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Dirk Gibson asked:

Gasoline is refined from oil. As a result, the prices at the pump are heavily influenced by the price of oil. When the price on a barrel of oil goes up, the price on a gallon of gas does as well. At least it used to. Lately, the prices don’t seem to track that well. The question is why?

You might not know it, but the United States was the Saudi Arabia of oil in the 1950s and 1960s. Unfortunately, oil production in the country peaked in the early 1970s and has been dropping steadily since then. Today, we produce well under 10 million barrels of oil a day, which is problematic since we use just under 20 million a day. To make up the difference, we import oil from places as close as Mexico and Canada or as far away as the Middle East.

The purchase of this foreign oil seems to be a fairly straight forward process. We buy oil for “x” amount and this translates to “z” price at the pump after the cost of refining and distributing it is added in. Oh, and don’t forget the 18.4 cent federal tax and state, county and city taxes to boot. Regardless, the price of gas should go up and down depending on the price of oil per this example. Well, it no longer does.

At its core, oil is a commodity much as copper, gold, wheat and corn is. The pricing of oil on the commodities markets, however, was such that it was rarely traded speculatively. We learned a lesson in how speculative investing in commodities like oil can drive wild price fluctuations. The summer of 2008 saw the price for a barrel of oil reach $140 and gas prices followed. The economic crash led to oil prices dropping under $30 and, again, prices at the pump followed.

Oil has rebounded this summer. The price per barrel is up to the $70 range. While prices at the pump have edged up a bit, they have not gone up to the expected levels. The reason is an excess in supply. Countries are now holding large oil supplies. This means the price per barrel should be dropping, but it isn’t because oil has become a speculative market that is divorced from the actual supply chain. Put in practical terms, this means you no longer can assume prices at the pump will track the cost of a barrel of oil. Whether that is a good thing or not is yet to be seen.

Why Fish Oil Price should not Determine Your Choice

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
oil price
Laurel Cohen asked:

You may disagree, but hear me out.  What you must be aware of when you are shopping for an omega-3 supplement is that fish oil price should not be the deciding factor in whether or not you buy a product.  Prices can vary wildly when it comes to supplements, and the most expensive brands are not always the ones that are of the highest quality.  Of course, you should not base your purchase on how much money you are saving on a product either.

As wildly as these supplements can vary in cost, they can also vary in purity, freshness, and bio-availability.  These are the important factors when it comes to buying omega-3 fatty acid products, because those formulas lacking in any of these departments are worse than not taking any supplements at all.  That your fish oil exceed industry standards in all three categories should be your focus.

Purity is far more important to you than fish oil price, because the fish from which these oils are extracted tend to accumulate high levels of toxic heavy metals, and chemical contaminants.  This is due to the fact that these predatory fish not only collect toxins from the water they live in, but they also store all of the toxins that the prey fish they feed upon have absorbed.  The higher up on the food chain a fish is the more toxic it will be.

Fish oil price does not reflect the levels of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, lead, furans, dioxins, chlordane, or PCBs that may be present, as some of the most expensive omega-3 fatty acid supplements tend to register the highest levels of toxicity.  These formulas are allowed on the market, because there is no real regulation when it comes to dietary supplements.  Limits are typically put on food containing these oils instead.

There is a group that calls themselves the International Fish Oil Standards, or IFOS.  They have set forth a set of standards showing what they believe to be an acceptable level for contamination in an omega-3 fatty acid product, but since they are a private organization and not a regulating body many of the companies regard these standards as merely a suggestion.

Regardless of fish oil price you need to make sure that the formula you are thinking of choosing has been through both a proprietary purification process, and molecular distillation.  The combination of these two purification methods will ensure that toxin levels are low enough that they cannot be measured.  Then, in order to ensure the bio-availability of the fish oil makes sure that the oil is present in both its natural triglyceride form and in an ethyl ester form for easy and effective absorbability.

In conclusion, in order to verify freshness the measurement of the peroxide value and the anisidine value are as low as possible, because the combinations of these two values give you total oxidation.  The lower the number the less chance that your oil will have formed harmful free radicals.  When all of the measures of purity, freshness, and bio-availability have been met; then and only then is fish oil price a consideration.

Chinese manufacturing data boosts oil prices

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Olukunle Odebo asked:

WORLD oil prices rallied yesterday, partly boosted by positive manufacturing data from China, which is the world’s second biggest energy consuming nation after the United States.

New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for December delivery gained $1.03 to $78.03 a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for December delivery was $1.22 higher at $76.42 per barrel.

“Robust economic data from China is lending support today,” said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch.

The HSBC China Manufacturing PMI, or purchasing managers index, was revealed yesterday to have risen to an 18-month high of 55.4 in October from 55.0 in September.

A reading above 50 means the sector is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates an overall decline.

A separate official Chinese PMI, compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics, showed manufacturing activity rose to 55.2 in October — the highest since May 2008 — from 54.3 in September.

Oil prices also found fresh support by a drop in the value of the US dollar.

The US unit fell against the euro yesterday amid fresh worries about the US financial sector following the bankruptcy of US bank CIT Group over the weekend, traders said.

The weaker greenback makes dollar-priced oil cheaper for buyers using stronger currencies and therefore tends to stimulate oil demand and prices.

In late morning London deals, the European single currency rose to $1.4772 from $1.4715 late on Friday.

Traders meanwhile assessed the global economic outlook in the wake of the CIT bankruptcy.

While data released last Thursday showed the United States has emerged from a prolonged recession, consumer spending, which accounts for two-thirds of the nation’s economic activity, fell in September.

“I think the reality is that the economic signals out there have been mixed,” said Victor Shum, a Singapore-based analyst with energy consultancy Purvin and Gertz.

“Last week there was positive US (gross domestic product) but consumer spending was quite negative.”

Shum added that “even though there are signs of economic recovery, the recovery appears to be on a shaky ground and also somewhat uncertain.”

The US said Friday consumer spending in the world’s biggest economy and energy user fell for the first time in five months in September.

A day earlier, the Commerce Department said the US economy grew at a seasonally adjusted 3.5 per cent in the September quarter from the previous three months.

It was the biggest growth in two years as the country emerged from a brutal recession that started in December 2007.

Be Careful! Fish Oil Price Is Not The Right Parameter To Judge The Quality And Purity Of The Oil

Monday, August 17th, 2009
oil price
Michael Holman asked:

Fish oil price is one of the important factors to be considered while selecting a good Omega 3 oil. After all when it comes to consuming it daily, you have to make sure that apart from suiting your health needs, it suits your wallet too.

Now if you have already done some research and compared the different Omega 3 products, you might have noticed a substantial difference in their price.

Don’t let this confuse you. A high fish oil price does not necessarily mean the oil is going to be of the best quality. It is a simple fact that some companies prefer spending money on marketing and promotion and hence automatically the cost of their products goes high.

While on the other hand, there are companies which prefer spending on improving the quality of the product rather than the marketing costs. The quality of the product is more or less same or even higher in case of these companies since they are willing to go the extra mile to ensure the quality and purity of their oil.

It is very important for you to ensure that whatever oil you select; you are getting it at the right fish oil price. After all if it is a little research that it takes to stop yourself from burning a hole in your pocket, why not give it a try?

All you need to look for is:

- Source of the fish oil – Salmon, Tuna and Mackerel are good sources of Omega 3. The best one is a fish called Hoki which comes from fresh and cold waters of New Zealand.

- Purity of the oil – some purification method like Molecular Distillation should be employed to separate ocean water contaminants from the oil. This is something that many oil companies choose to skip; but believe me this is very important for your health. So be very sure on this.

Once you are sure of the quality and purity of the oil, you can check for yourself whether it has the correct fish oil price tag or not.

Don’t end up spending more for something that is available at a half price, just because it is not an advertised product.

Effective oils are waiting to be all yours at an unbelievable fish oil price of less than $20 a month. For more information on such effective and reasonably priced natural fish oil supplement, visit my website listed below.

High Crude Oil Prices Raise Prices On Everything

Sunday, August 16th, 2009
oil price
Bond Mejeh asked:

The effects of high crude oil prices are insidiously working their way through the world economy. Because oil is at the core of almost everything we do; any dramatic price shifts are almost immediately reflected in major product segments. From airline ticket prices, to tires, from the price of a grape fruit to a three pound can of coffee. Even the price of electricity is impacted by higher petroleum prices.

While companies, governments and individuals all share the same pain from higher oil prices, ultimately it is the individual who pays for all of it. Companies are owned by individual investors, government is funded by individual taxpayers, and it is the individual consumer who buys the products and services marketed by companies. So, in the end, high oil prices are all about how it impacts families and the individual consumer.

How does the average American react to these dramatically increasingly gas prices?

The answer depends on whether the increases are sustained over a long period of time, or if it is a short-term spike.

Unfortunately, our current round of high crude oil prices seems to be a sustained, long term trend. The available evidence suggests that we need to adapt to the higher prices. Individually we are going to have to make many changes in our appliances, transportation, and housing to cut costs while maintaining the standard of living we all want.

In many cases, technology will help us cut our energy consumption through new efficient designs. Other techniques, such as a recirculation pump on our hot water heater will also help us save energy and thereby save money. It is unlikely that there is one big thing out there that will be the total answer to the ever-higher crude oil prices or the solution to conserve our energy needs; more likely it is going to be a collection of small savings here and there that add up to big savings for the individual.

Individual conservation is an important part of the solution to this complex problem that is on our hands. Public Policy is also an equally important factor. Part of the reason we have this problem is because we need to increase domestic supply and distribution. We should all know by now, that to solve, or better these problems, can only come to fruition if we all work together.

Now that gas is so low, is there a way to lock in the price? Sort of like the locking in the heating oil price?

Nina asked:

If it’s possible to lock in the heating oil price (for a fee), shouldn’t we also be able to lock in the gas price?
