I was enraged after reading that many people consider fish oil price as the only parameter to rate the effectiveness of the fish oil. They have a wrong notion that money can buy them everything including health. Remember the old saying – All that glitters is not gold, same holds true even for omega 3 supplements too. Fish oil price has got nothing to do with the effectiveness and its quality. Mind it; I am not encouraging you to go in for cheap supplements. All I am pointing is that best supplements need not be expensive. I have seen some very expensive oils containing more toxins and fewer omegas 3 than one costing much less than them.

With increasing pollution in ocean water, fishes in them tend to accumulate high levels of toxic heavy metals, and chemical contaminants like mercury, PCBs, lead, arsenic, etc. Consumption of oil extracted from such tainted fishes can lead to various health hazards like mercury poisoning. Fish oil price can never give an idea of the levels of toxins it contains. I have seen some of the most expensive soft gels having highest levels of toxicity.

An effective omega3 supplement undergoes molecular distillation process to filter out all the unwanted and harmful toxins, leaving beside the rich and high quality fish-oil. It also has first-class COA (Certificate of Analysis) and is backed up by various standards like International Fish Oil Standards, or IFOS.

It is a known fact that DHA and EPA type of omega 3 are much crucial for our health as compared to ALA. Many overpriced supplements contain higher percentages of ALA instead of DHA and EPA. Since the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA is very complex and not very efficient; thus even after taking fish-oil you can remain deprived of essential omega fats. It also observed that quite a few supplements have more EPA than DHA. This is also not recommended.

Effective one has high DHA to EPA ratio; 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA is needed for maximum benefits.

Like we just discussed; fish oil price is no where related to its quality instead it is related to the marketing cost. There are many companies which prefer spending money on researches to improve the quality of the product rather than on advertisements and promotions.

You should always check the purity of the product by looking at its COA. Freshness can be tested by cutting open a soft gel and smelling it; strong fishy or any artificial smell is an indicator of rancid fish and poor maintenance.
